Korean skincare has a reputation for being overwhelming. Ten steps, dozens of product categories, an entirely different vocabulary. The reality is much simpler – you don’t need all of it, and most people who’ve been doing K-beauty for years are running a four or five step routine at most. Here’s how to actually get started.
Start With Three Products
Before anything else, get these three right:
A cleanser. Korean cleansers are gentler and more pH-balanced than most Western alternatives, which means your skin isn’t starting every day stripped and irritated. The COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser is the classic entry point – effective, affordable, and hard to get wrong.
A moisturiser. K-beauty moisturisers tend to be lighter and more layerable than Western ones, focusing on hydration rather than occlusion. See our Best Korean Moisturisers guide for options across every skin type.
A sunscreen. Non-negotiable, and also where K-beauty genuinely outperforms the rest of the world. Korean SPFs are lightweight, skin-caring, and nothing like the thick, white-cast formulas most people grew up tolerating. See Best Korean Sunscreens.
That’s it to start. Give it four weeks before adding anything else.
What to Add Next
Once the basics are working, pick one thing to address based on what your skin actually needs:
Dullness or uneven tone – add a vitamin C or niacinamide serum. The Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum is a good starting point.
Dehydration – add a toner or essence before your moisturiser. See Best Korean Toners & Essences.
Breakouts or congestion – add a BHA exfoliant two or three times a week. The COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid is the go-to.
Sensitivity or redness – add a centella or heartleaf serum. The Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner doubles as both.
The K-Beauty Vocabulary You Actually Need
Essence – a watery, hydrating step that goes on before serum. Think of it as extra hydration, not a treatment.
Toner – in K-beauty this means a hydrating first step, not an astringent. Completely different to Western toners.
Ampoule – a concentrated serum, usually used for a short period to address a specific concern.
Sleeping mask – an overnight treatment applied as the last step, left on while you sleep.
That’s genuinely all you need to know to get started.

The One Thing to Remember
K-beauty works through consistency, not complexity. A three-step routine done every day will always beat a ten-step routine done when you remember. Start small, pay attention to how your skin responds, and add products only when you have a reason to.
